Our slow cooker has arrived! We are so excited to try out our new Hamilton Beach Set ‘n Forget 6-Quart Programmable Slow Cooker! Now, I’m not going to lie, I was Williams Sonoma almost about to buy an All Clad or Calphalon slow cooker, when Michael did some quick iPhone googling research, he discovered that the $200 slow cooker I was about to buy got worse ratings than the $59.99 one on sale at Macys! So, we saved money and apparently bought the “most recommended” slow cooker available.
To test out our very first experience with the slow cooker, we decided to do something simple, quick & easy (just in case it was an absolute disaster). We opted to make some paleo shredding beef. The outcome, pretty spectacular (not to mention the aromas in our house from about 4pm – 7pm were amazing)!
The slow cooker worked perfectly and the beef was so soft it melted in our mouths; however, the flavors needed a slight adjustment. It might be because I’m used to strong flavors and sauces, so to have beef/onion in a broth left my palette a little bored. What it needed was a little sweetness and more tang, so next time we’ll try adding in some carrots, apple cider vinegar and maybe some more spices.
- 2lb grass fed beef (I used a roast, but any lean piece would work)
- 2 large sweet onions, sliced
- ½ cup chicken or beef broth (I used free range low sodium chicken broth)
- 1 teaspoon sea salt
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon cumin
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon chili powder
- Using the slow cooker, put in the meat
- Add the broth
- Add the onions on top of the meat
- Add the spices on top
- Start the slow cooker
- Cook for 8-10 hours on low
- When done, shred, serve and enjoy!
